Today I met with my tutee Mariana over Facetime. It has been a few weeks so we caught up on our lives and school since. She started watching more American tv so we discussed that. I then presented her a few shows I felt were entertaining on a few different platforms. We chose the good place on Netflix because she has that platform and it is a funny show as well as short(30 mins). I gave her a simple run down of the beginning and asked her to write down any idioms, jokes, or funny phrases that she did not understand to discuss later.

As we watched I would pause and ask her questions about what was happening "What problem is Eleanor facing right now?, What was her occupation before this?, Who is the guy with the glasses and why is he at her house?, What is a 'white lie' " . I also asked her what words meant as we went like "selective, primitive, fundamental, prohibited, and database ". She also asked me about some words like, "ripple, shall, forked up , elderly, naughty, arsonist, condesending and teensy " and we would pause and discuss the words, their definition, and how they are used in a sentence, until she understood.

This show used a lot of idioms and metaphors which allowed me to get good at explaining the tones and intent of English in different scenarios. I use a lot of theatrics when I talk anyways so I made sure when explaining to give plenty of tone and body language to help. This show introduced a lot of English used in casual conversation that she had not seen before which was super cool to teach, like the word crumb.

After watching we went over anything she wrote down and I asked her, her general feelings on the show as well as any predictions. After this I asked her if there was anything specific she wanted to work on next time.
