 Tutoring Session #20

Date/Time: Thursday, August 7th, 5-6pm

Location: Online

Session Summary:

I started this session by showing a short video about Chicago, with music instead of narration in the background. We also spoke about previous experiences visiting (or living near) Chicago.

Then, I showed various photos of Chicago tourist attractions. This includes the Willis Tower, the Bean, deep-dish pizza, Navy Pier, and the Art Institute.

For the reading activity, Ride read a short fictional passage about a person's day visiting Chicago. I included derived words to connect with our previous session.

After he read the passage, stopping at each paragraph, I asked if he needed clarification or definitions. I instructed him to find the derived words and separate base words from the affixes.

To close our sessions, I asked some reflection questions: What do you feel like you’ve improved upon?, What do you think you can improve upon?, and What can I change to improve my teaching?

Lessons Learned about Teaching:

In working with adults, it is important to find ways to keep things fun without infantilizing them. At the same time, adults are like kids in that they need breaks, interaction, and to change tasks to keep them motivated.
