Tutoring Je-won - Session 9
Date/Time: Saturday, August 23, 8:00 AM - 9:00 AM EST (9:00 PM-10:00 PM KST)
Location: Google Meet
Topic/Skill: Minimal Pairs/Speaking
Today was our final tutoring session together. I started off with a brief review of the types of pronouns we talked about last time, and I asked if my lesson was new to him or review. It was review, which is why he could better understand and identify the types of pronouns when I went back over the interview questions with him. Then, we resumed our discussion of minimal pairs.
We went over the sounds we practiced last session. <L> and <r> sounds were difficult for him, so we spent half of our time practicing example pairs and sentences. Then, we practiced <s> and <th> sounds, which proved to be a lot harder.
It was particularly difficult to practice more subtle minimal pairs because we meet virtually, so the sound quality of his mic of choice had an impact on how well I could hear him. I still could hear him, but I also had to trust that he could differentiate the sounds based on what I could see and how he told me he felt after thorough practice of each pair.
As we approached the end of our lesson time, I wrapped things up by sharing the website I used as reference for our minimal pairs' word banks. Then, I gave him instructions to email Prof. Kim since we were finished. Finally, I asked him if he enjoyed our tutoring sessions and if he felt like he learned anything. Both were positive answers. I thanked him for meeting with me and for allowing me to teach him, and we said goodbye.
