Guerna TS#11

Date/Time: August 14th, 3:00 PM - 4:00 PM EST
Location: Publix
Topic/Skill: Speaking & Listening
Student: Wei Wang

This lesson served as both a review and an interactive practice session centered on grocery shopping, with a particular focus on speaking and listening in real-world contexts. After a brief review of previously introduced vocabulary, Wei and I transitioned into an experiential activity at Publix, where she was able to apply her language skills in an authentic environment.

At the store, we revisited and expanded upon key grocery-related vocabulary, including food items, packaging terms, and phrases useful for navigating different sections of the supermarket. Wei practiced identifying and naming items as we walked through the produce section, dairy aisle, bakery, frozen foods, and pantry goods, reinforcing both pronunciation and categorization. She also worked on using countable and uncountable nouns in context, such as distinguishing between a loaf of bread and some milk.

In addition to vocabulary, Wei actively practiced functional speaking skills, asking and answering practical questions like “Where can I find…?”, “How much does this cost?”, and “Do you usually buy this?” These exchanges allowed her to strengthen fluency and accuracy in a more natural, conversational way. The interactive setting helped Wei gain confidence using English spontaneously, since she was required to recall and apply language on the spot rather than in a controlled classroom exercise. By the end of the lesson, she demonstrated stronger command of the shopping-related vocabulary and showed increased comfort using complete sentences to describe items, locate products, and ask questions.
