Guerna TS #2
Date/Time: June 30th, 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM EST
Location: Dirac Library
Topic/Skill: Grammar/Writing
Student: Wei Wang
This lesson focused on developing Wei's grammar and writing skills, specifically sentence structure, the use of connectors, and verb tense consistency. Since Wei is an intermediate-level ESL student who learns best through visual and interactive methods, the lesson was designed to balance structured grammar practice with creative expression.
The session began with a warm-up using pictures that depicted everyday activities such as crafts, walking on campus, and relaxing at home. These visuals helped activate vocabulary and encouraged Wei to share personal experiences, which provided a natural entry point into writing. She responded to questions like “What do you see?” and “What do you like to do in your free time?” and together we brainstormed sentences aloud. This initial discussion set the tone for the lesson by linking language practice to her own life and interests.
The core of the lesson focused on building sentences and paragraphs through guided practice. Using sentence frames such as “I enjoy ___ because ___” and “In my free time, I often ___,” Wei was able to practice creating complete thoughts with correct subject–verb–object structure. We then expanded these sentences into a short paragraph about her hobbies and daily life in Tallahassee. During this process, she was introduced to new vocabulary like Badminton, racket, raised, force, pencil case, pencil sharpener, pastel, and outlet , which she successfully incorporated into her writing. Special attention was given to using connectors—and, but, because—to link her ideas smoothly and create a cohesive paragraph.
Toward the end of the session, Wei read her paragraph aloud. This not only gave her practice with pronunciation and fluency but also allowed her to hear and notice her own errors. With guided feedback, she was able to self-correct some tense issues and refine her sentences. Together, we created a small visual word bank from her writing, which will serve as a reference for future sessions and help reinforce vocabulary retention.
Overall, Wei demonstrated progress in her ability to organize her ideas into clear, grammatically correct sentences and connect them effectively in writing.
