Guerna TS #13

Date/Time: August 19th, 3:00 PM - 4:00 PM EST
Location: Dirac Library
Topic/Skill: Speaking & Listening Lesson: Clothes & Shopping (Extended)
Student: Wei Wang

This lesson represents the second part of this unit, where we built upon the foundational vocabulary from the first day and extend her knowledge into new areas, such as patterns, materials, and jewelry/accessories.

The session began with a short warm-up video to activate listening skills and provide exposure to authentic language use related to shopping. From there, Wei was introduced to a comprehensive vocabulary chart, which included not only clothing items but also descriptive details like fabric types (cotton, wool, polyester, suede), patterns (pinstripes, plaid, polka dots), and accessories (rings, cufflinks, necklaces, anklets). Special care was taken to present each term with both a definition and an example sentence, so Wei could see how the vocabulary would naturally appear in real conversation.

Next, we revisited the shopping dialogue from the previous lesson, giving Wei another opportunity to solidify her listening comprehension skills. She listened to the realistic exchange between a shop assistant and a customer, identified any unfamiliar expressions, and practiced responding to comprehension questions. Together, we analyzed the dialogue, focusing on functional expressions useful for real-world shopping scenarios, such as “Do you have this in a different size/color?”, “I’m looking for something more formal,” and “That’s trendy right now.”

To reinforce speaking and interaction, Wei practiced role-plays by alternating between the roles of customer and shop assistant. This activity allowed her to produce sentences using the new vocabulary while also developing flexibility in responding appropriately within a shopping context. The lesson concluded with a cultural note and discussion segment, where Wei compared shopping practices in the U.S. and in her home country. We discussed topics such as return and exchange policies, the importance of brand-name clothing, the popularity of online versus in-person shopping, and cultural influences on clothing choices during festivals or special occasions. This reflective discussion helped connect the language lesson to real-world cultural knowledge, making the vocabulary more meaningful and memorable.
