Guerna CO #5

Date/Time: June 26th, 9:00-9:50

Topic/Skill: Composition (Interview) (Beginner)

Teacher Presentation:

  • The teacher presented an interview task where students would ask peers basic personal questions (e.g. name, age, address).
  • To support the students linguistically, the teacher provided a template with all the basic information students would be collecting during their interviews.
  • Additionally, the teacher offered a set of useful phrases and example sentences to help students introduce themselves, explain the purpose of the interview, and ask questions.
  • This scaffolding was especially helpful for beginners, ensuring they felt confident and prepared to engage in both speaking and writing components of the task.

Classroom management:

  • The task promoted interaction and movement while maintaining structure.

  • The teacher circulated during the activity to monitor engagement and assist as needed.

  • Students stayed on-task thanks to the clear template and visual cues provided.

Materials: PowerPoint, whiteboard, Interview template, shared document (for writing and real time feedback)

Feedback Provided:

  • The teacher used the shared document platform to provide immediate feedback on student writing.

  • Spelling, sentence structure, and grammar were corrected as students typed.

  • Feedback was supportive and timely, helping students internalize corrections as they worked.

Lesson(s) on teaching I learned:

  • Providing linguistic scaffolding (sentence frames, templates) is crucial for beginner learners.

  • Interactive tasks like peer interviews give students authentic reasons to use the language.

  • Combining oral and written tasks strengthens retention and builds confidence.

  • Real-time writing tools allow for personalized and immediate feedback, which boosts accuracy and learning.
