Listening Class Beginners Group 1, Professor Ryan Flemming

Date/Time: Tuesday, 7/1, 2-2:50

Topic/Skill: Listening Comprehension about Nutrition

Class Summary:

First, the professor reviewed what the students completed for homework yesterday. They did a Cloze listening activity (fill-in-the-blank). Then, he explained to students the plan for the day. They will be listening to a lecture on nutrition. He made sure to define "lecture", with visuals, examples, and non-examples.

After, the professor started a chart and asked students about what they know about nutrition. They provided answers like, "It's equally important as exercise" and "The study of what you need to eat". With the professor guiding the discussion, students asked questions about nutrition, such as "How many calories do I need to be eating?".

Then, students listened to a short lecture about nutrition. Since students have different proficiency levels, there were two lectures for students to listen to at different levels. After listening to the lecture, students answered true or false questions about the content in the lecture.

To end class, students selected the main idea on a Google Form. Then, the professor discussed what makes the right answer the main idea.

Lessons on Teaching I've Learned:

It is vital to provide scaffolded materials to students that match their proficiency level. Tailored materials contribute to comprehensible input in class. Therefore, it is valuable to take time to prepare extra materials.
