Topic/Skill: Expressing Opinions/Writing
Mini lesson: prepositions
Today, I met with Je-ah for our 4th session. I asked her about how she’s doing and her busy week. Then, we got started talking about opinions. I reminded her that I asked her about things she likes when we started our tutoring lessons. Then, I introduced opinion paragraphs. I broke it down by sentence with a model paragraph and transition words/phrases. Then, I gave her a template with transition phrases and topics to choose from.
I initially told her she had 10 minutes to write 6 sentences, but she spent a larger portion of the session writing her sentences. She was stuck on a grammar question. I tried to ask questions to help her clarify some parts of a sentence, but she had a complex idea. I gave her a mini lesson about prepositions because she was trying to write a lengthy sentence but didn’t have the tools to break it up and make it make sense grammatically. We agreed to go over prepositions more in-depth next session. After we resolved her sentence, she read her paragraph aloud, and I commented more on the message of her paragraph.
Afterwards, I asked her to rate the difficulty on a scale of 1-5, and she admitted to it being more of a 4-5. I admitted that the topic she had chosen was the most difficult of the three I gave her, but I included that topic because I was curious about her opinion. We planned to go over prepositions next session and more opinion writing in the session after that.
