Listening - Group 4 (Advanced) - Dr. Felicia Ciappetta
Date/Time: Tuesday, July 1, 2:00 PM - 2:50 PMTopic/Skill: International Beauty Standards/Listening and writing
Summary: Prior to class, Dr. Ciappetta asked students to submit a few topics about what they want to learn about to make class more engaging. This class session started with a brief discussion implicitly about beauty standards - appearance standards for men vs. women, cultural differences, and social media influence before introducing the topic. The students were then asked what they thought today's lesson would be about, which was "International Beauty Standards."
Dr. Ciappetta transitioned into the main activity by asking students to shut down distractions, like phones and notebooks, so they could focus on listening. The students listened to a 5-minute passage, had 5 minutes to discuss the listening passage with a partner, and then had a 5-minute class discussion with Dr. Ciappetta.
After, they relistened to the 5-minute passage and took notes, optionally, with a template. Then, the students were given 8 minutes to compare notes and summarize the main points with each other. Dr. Ciappetta asked students what they learned during the 2nd listen that they missed in the 1st listen.
I learned that repeated listening may allow students to process the spoken lecture better. The first time as listen-only allowed them to take in the main points, while taking notes during the second listen helped them remember the details.
