        Ryan Flemming

        High Intermediate- Composition

Topic/skill: Persuasive essay writing, Thesis statements

To start off the class Mr. Flemming briefly went over what they discussed last class and how it transitions into this one. The topic being persuasive writing, specifically essays. Students were assigned persuasive essays by previous CIES students to read last class as homework and have prepared for today. He then asked the class their opinion on the writing in the essays. He asks them to simply list some of the topics/arguments they read about and wrote them down on the board. He asks them questions like "what was their reasoning?" and "was this persuasive?" to help them understand what aspects in writing are persuasive and if they are effective. He also asks them simple questions to make sure they are comprehending the essays and not just reading.

He then starts to talk about thesis statements, giving simple examples, and explaining what is needed for one, as well as how it should be set up in the writing. Using the students' ideas he had previously written on the board he guides them into turning those ideas into simple thesis statements.

Next he starts discussing the writing process. He splits the students into groups of two and gives them two minutes to complete a matching diagram where they match the steps of the writing process in the correct order. He then goes over the steps with the class, asking groups the share their answers to diagram. He guides them to the correct answers if they do not know and explains why each step is in their rightful place in the process.

Lastly, he asks the class to brainstorm persuasive topics, specifically hot takes. He then shows them some examples from previous classes and asks them to name some of theirs. Ending the class with a brainstorm session.
