Professor Ryan Flemming

Group 3 High Intermediate- Grammar

During this class Professor Flemmings focus was on past tense, specifically the pronunciation of words in the past tense.

Before the first activity Professor Flemming showed a graphic that describes the differences in -ed endings when they are pronounces (id, t, d). He had the students briefly practice before starting his first activity.

The first activity was a game of connect 4. Professor Flemming projected a game board of short phrases written in past tense on the whiteboard. The class was then split into two groups. Each player on the team would pick a square on the board that contained a sentence and try to pronounce it correctly, if they did well that square would be their team's color. To win the game each team would have to get four sentences correct in a row.

This was a very engaging activity for the students. It was also a lot of fun because they could pick sentences that, if they got correct, would block their opponents and prevent them from winning. It was a great way to making practicing enjoyable.

After that both teams watched separate videos of a clip from Mr. Bean. Once they had watched the videos they were tasked with creating a short story using the past tense to describe what happened in their clip. Then the next class the students who watched video A would be quizzed on video B. But they would not be watching video B. They would read their classmates story and use that information to take the quiz on video B.

This was a great way for students to practice formulating sentences using proper grammar and using context clues in the video to figure out what was going on.

Professor Flemming always made sure to walk around when it came time for individual assignments. This way he could answer any questions that they had while also surveying their progress.

From this observation I learned new ways to make learning fun for students while still providing them with a proper way to practice what they are learning.
