Dr. Felicia Ciappetta

Group 1 Beginners - Grammar

The focus of today's lesson was on the basics of grammar and sentence structure.

The first half of the class the students spent time practicing what they were learning on their laptops. Each student had a google doc. that was shared with Dr. Ciappetta. This allowed her to shadow them and see the different ways that they tried to fill out the different prompts that she had provided them. It also allowed her to provide them with feedback or remind them to revisit their notes.

After they were done practicing writing with proper grammar, she then had them practice saying their sentences out loud without looking at their google doc.

The main thing they were focusing on was how to write and say general information about themselves that might be needed to fill out a form. This included first name, last name, birthdate, gender, where they were from, home address, telephone number, and email.

After the students were done writing and speaking their answers, Dr. Ciappetta had them both interview me with the same questions and write down my answers. This gave them practice using different pronouns, spelling new words, and listening to someone spelling and writing down what they heard.

During this class, I realized that there are many things that I know that I don't remember learning so I wouldn't think to teach them. For example, when it came time to the students reading their email address out loud, they could not recall what this symbol "@" meant. To me I always read "at", so I don't think much of it. Same with ".com" reading as "dot com". So, I learned that it's important to teach everything, especially the things that may seem like common sense.
